After Oakland Exploded

in October 2011 after a U.S. Marine Vet almost died from a police headwind, the protest movement in Oakland kicked into overdrive. A general strike was organized, which showed the power of mass movements, along with the troublemakers.

This is a breakdown of the course of events during Occupy Oakland's general strike. Overall it was a beautiful, peaceful march, where anywhere from 20-40 thousand people spontaneously took to the streets. We shut down the port to demand economic and environmental justice, and send a message to corporations who put profit before people and planet. It was a rousing success, however it was somewhat tarnished by the "Black Block" anarchists, who showed up at the march to smash windows, light things on fire, and provoke police. The violent anarchists are NOT the 99%, the 99% are the people who work, live, and struggle in our community. Let's make this movement non-violent, and take back Occupy Oakland from the "Black Block".
